FWnetz V3 Initial thoughts
Regardless of its short term future, it’s time again to reconsider a redesign for FWnetz. So far, Brian Gardner’s Revolution Theme has served us OK, but we’ve kept adding on features and, after roughly nine operational months, it has become much more clear what works and what doesn’t.
A lot doesn’t, in particular “community” elements such as adding articles, pictures and the forum. Comments are lively, but that’s pretty much it. As to why this is so, it can only be an educated guess. Perhaps, the move from fun and personal blog to “commercial offering” has put some people off, but my hint it’s got to do with focussing on other things than community management. Further, the theme, at least to me, seems both tired and too much off the shelf.
To cut it short, FWnetz V3 is on the way, but still a way off. Basically, I need to rethink which features I’d like to keep, and which ones to get rid of. Second, I’ll need to reposition and focus on what creates sales: the shop. But I’m not quite willing to give up on everything else. So, there are business goals, and the new site will have to cater for how much time I can invest. Either (almost) none, or plenty, depending on what happens the next few days.
So I’ve taking to storyboarding, which to me is always the most fun part of a Web project. As for inspiration, there are a few out there. I don’t have the resources, either financial or technical, to create an entirely new genre, and there’s nothing wrong in my eyes to grab a good idea here and there.

Vimeo seems to filter out higher freqs, the chopper track seems more washed out. Good to know :)

2009: Make or Break
Welcome 2009, a make or break year for FWnetz. Q4 2008 saw some good sales of DVDs and definitely proved that positioning as a learning hub is the right way, if not only way to make any kind of revenue in the firefighting sector. So there are a few new products in the pipeline, resulting in 14 hour workdays minimum, but it’s worth it. Keeping eyes peeled and fingers crossed.
10 Gründe für einen Alleingang
Ich bin öfters darauf angesprochen worden, warum ich FWnetz im Alleingang mache, anstatt mich gleich um eine Finanzierung zu bemühen. Vielleicht geht’s nicht nur mir so, hier also eine kleine Auflistung, die ein Quäntchen anti-Businessplan rüberkommen dürfte.
1) Keine Lust mehr auf Businesspläne
Den ersten richtigen Businessplan habe ich 1999 geschrieben. Die Zeit bis zum letzten Jahr habe ich damit verbracht, Geschäftsmodelle zu entwickeln und diese in Businesspläne zu gießen.
So viel Energie wie damals habe ich dank Kinder und Alter und (habe ich’s erwähnt) vor lauter Businesspläne nicht mehr. Mein Businessplan ist in meinem Kopf – nur die Variablen, denn eine Abschätzung ist erst später, nach dem Launch, möglich
2) WTF BGA Q11?
Kosten für Büro- und Geschäftsaustattung im 11. Quartal?
3) 10 Businesspläne
Eigentlich muss ich 10 Businesspläne schreiben, Investorgerecht variiert. Darf’s ein bisschen mehr Schweinebauch sein? Operatives Break-Even Q3 oder Q5? Wie hätten sie’s gern?
4) Es gibt keine Konkurrenz, wirklich. Höchstens Alternativen. Wirklich.
5) Mein Exit ist ein anderer als Deiner, nämlich gar keiner. Fingers crossed.
6) Meine Plattform.
7) Der Markt ist begrenzt und überschaubar. Für mich ist das OK.
8) Ich behaupte es geht auch ohne Rieseninvest. Ich schaue wie es sich entwickelt, und falls ich Liqui brauche, kann ich mir die auch so holen. Hoffe ich. Ich will mich auf die Plattform konzentrieren und nicht auf 2-tägige Finanzreports.
9) Ich will mich nicht durch Werbung finanzieren.
10) Und zu guter letzt: es kommt immer anders als man sich das vorstellt. Der Businessplan ist mit dem ersten polarisierten Partikel auf der Serverplatte obsolet. Ich möchte die Freiheit haben, das von Anfang an das Modell um 180 Grad drehen zu können (auch hier nachzulesen) ohne dafür aus der eigenen Firma gefeuert zu werden. Womit Punkte 1-9 verfallen würden.
Achso: einen Businessplan wird es schon geben: nach 2-3 Monaten, auf 4-5 Seiten. Das soll reichen. Das mit der Fremdfinanzierung kann man sich dann immer noch überlegen.
Ausprobiert: MarsEdit
Hab mal ein paar Postings mit dem MarsEdit, einem Blog-Editor ausprobiert. Davon gehört bei Guy Kawasaki. Unter MovableType hatte ich mit dem ecto gearbeitet, nach der Umstellung auf WordPress dann jedoch nicht mehr. Der war nicht schlecht, weil man damit zu 100% offline arbeiten konnte.
MarsEdit lockt mich insbesondere mit der “problemlosen” Einbindung von Flickr-Bildern.
Ich würde auch $40 für einen super Editor auf den Tisch legen, nur leider a) Arbeitet er nicht im WYSIWYG-Modus, sondern man muss wieder richtiges HTML einklopfen. Hier ist der WP Online-Editor um Meilen besser. Sicher, ich könnte Macros bauen, aber das möchte ich mir nicht antun. b) Lassen sich Flickr-Bilder zwar einbinden, aber ein Resize ist nicht möglich. Die mittlere Größe wird bei Flickr mit 500 angezeigt, ich brauche aber 450. Mein CSS ist ein Haufen Müll, aber es funktioniert tadellos – in Firefox. Der passt die Bilder an. In Explorer jedoch verschwindet ein Teil des Textes unter einer Seitenleiste. Und letztlich c) muss man die Bilder beim Schreiben erstmal auf den Server uploaden. Das ist für mich nicht wirklich offline. Bei ecto konnte man die lokal ablegen und später alles komplett uploaden.
Fazit: für mich nicht das richtige, ich bleibe lieber beim Browserbasierten Editor. Notfalls schreibe ich einen Text offline und bereite die Bilder vor.
