Come to us so we can forget about you

Adrants has a nice piece about a Canadian bank that is offering a free iPod to new customers. In other words, it is penalising existing customers, or, as a commenter puts it, "come to us, then we take you for granted".

I guess the solution would have been to offer two free iPods (or the equivalent thereof): one for an existing customer as a referrer, and one for the new customer. Or offer a free iPod to the referrer and a choice of music to be shared with the new customer. At least, leverage the potential of your customers rather than pissing them off.

Besides that, I do doubt that a free iPod (and that's "only" the Shufle) is reason enough to switch banks. A switch is always a major undertaking, and the reasons for doing so usually run much deeper than being presented with an electronic gadget.

You're absolutely right. The point of the rant about the bank is the ever growing injustice and lack of service that the bank has continued, to finally have something that THIS customer would want, and then told "Sorry. It's not for you."

It's like going to your birthday party, eeveryone is there to wish you a happy birthday, and ten being told you can't have the cake.

Now where is my blood pressure medication....?
